Titles song: Because the night by Patti Smith

Kevin and Ron become inseparable, with Kevin fairly obsessed and Ron slowly becoming seduced into letting Kevin get closer. Balancing school, enjoying his drama activities and every evening with Ron, Kevin pushes his normal boundaries and stays out later and later.

A confrontation with his mother happens one night on his late return home, and Kevin comes out to her as gay, spontaneously, leaving Mary shattered. The years of reading and research pay off for Kevin and he pulls his gay library out of the closet and gives it to Mary, letting her know it’s going to be okay, and that they can talk more once she’s read up on things.

Mary and Kevin discuss the books and she tells his dad for him, who is surprisingly fine. He flashes back to scenes from Kevin’s childhood, where he realized Kevin identified more as a girl, and he took on the role of protector.

Kevin asks to stay overnight at Ron’s house, and the parents want to meet him first. A dinner is arranged at home and is fairly awkward because Kevin plays it like “guess who’s coming to dinner?” not revealing anything about Ron prior. Parents are upset that he didn’t tell them about his age or race, but Kevin defiantly reminds them of his Christian upbringing and the values they’d instilled.

Kevin gets permission and starts to stay overnight with Ron, and they share passionate nights, exchange music, smoke cigarettes, and explore various drugs.

Kevin gets his diploma unceremoniously while eating in the cafeteria.

They take a road trip to Seattle, feeling more free to express themselves. Kevin has been accepted to college in Seattle, and the prospect looms, creating an internal struggle with the uncertainty of moving away and losing Ron.
